Vitor Belfort made a statement regarding his TRT use via his twitter page today.
“This will be last time that I will talk about TRT I never hide from #ufc that I was on the treatment but I admit that I didnt admit to the press. I confess that this was my mistake I am MEN enough to admit my mistakes So from now on , guys please don’t fight me if u going to use this as a execuse that’s it. I never lie and never hide from ufc.”
TRT is about to be a big issue in MMA and it is starting to look like Vitor could become the face of this issue. Bottom line is right now its legal but for the good of the sport it needs to be more closely regulated. Athletes will always look for an edge but there is no reason for a 37 year old man to have the testosterone levels of a 22 year old. That is not the way the human body works. Vitor tested positive for the anabolic steroid 4-Hydroxytestosterone after his 2006 Pride fight with Dan Henderson. Under the Nevada State Athletic Regulation rules if a person has failed a previous drug test then it is very difficult to get a TRT exemption. Vitor’s last fight was in Brazil and his next fight is as well. It is not clear to me how the exemption works foreign countries. Let’s hope that with more strict testing and supervision MMA can rid itself of this issue sooner rather than later.
