UFC lightweight champ Benson Henderson told UFC Tonight that if he is victorious against his next opponent, Gilbert Melendez, he wants to move up and fight GSP for the welterweight title. “I am a fan of the sport on top of being a competitor. I see all this talk about super fights and other fighters getting to dictate what weight classes they want to move up and down to in order to get title shots. I’m the UFC’s lightweight champion and I feel I should be allowed to make such statements myself.” Dana White quickly shot that idea down stating that Henderson just won the title and there are plenty of fighters for him to defend it against. Moving weight classes for immediate title shots is becoming a trend. Goes to show that the UFC is more interested in putting on big money fights than developing contenders. People want to see super fights but Henderson has some more work to do at lightweight before he challenges for the welterweight belt. Thanks to MMA Fighting for the quote.
